Choose Shopify or WordPress to build a website
First of all, everyone should know that shopify is not an independent website, but a kind of website building tool. There are many foreign website building tools, including the well-known ones:
Open source WordPress+WooCommerce,
Magento and bigcommerce were excluded first, because there are not many people who can use them, and it is not easy to find someone to solve the problem. I can’t find reliable tutorials and answers on the Internet, and it is not recommended for other non-mainstream beginners. This article only discusses Shopify VS WordPress.
I don’t really like to talk about general trends, so this article will analyze the actual cost, ease of use, operation, etc. of novice entry. I promise that this article will definitely tell you to use it better than most of what you find online. Anything built on the site is grounded. Try not to tax your IQ.
1. Comparison of website construction mode and learning cost
Shopify: Based on the SAAS system, the server and other environments have already been matched by others. You only need to register an account, choose a theme, and decorate the store yourself.
Worpress: One more step, you need to build your own server. The latter is actually the same as Shopify, which is to decorate the store by yourself. As for SSL and so on, it’s all over now, it’s all done with one click, and the graphics are done.
In fact, many people think that it is difficult for WordPress to build its own server. In fact, I tell you, it is not difficult at all. Now go buy a server host. Basically, the other party has already set up the environment for you, and you can complete the installation with one click.
In my opinion, if we start from scratch, the operation and learning costs are close to each other. If it is difficult, it is not difficult to watch online tutorials. As for background management, after a few days of familiarity, the difficulty and complexity of both operations are the same.
The pitfall about website speed is that if you don’t take care of optimization, both Shopify and WordPress will be slow.
1.1 Basic cost of building a website
First look at the basic monthly rent:
Shopify: monthly rent, basic $29, advanced $79, advanced $299, plus $2000 starting
WordPress: Server monthly rent, I think it is the standard shopify, starting at $3, advanced $5~20, advanced $20~50, super-large website with more than 100,000 monthly ip, need to use $100~500 monthly rent server.
It can be seen that the basic website construction cost of WordPress is only one-tenth of Shopify! Shopify starts at $360 plus plug-in themes, etc. At least $500 a year, WordPress I tell you, $60 a year can be very fragrant, saving $400+ is enough for you to cold start, invest in advertising or SEO to buy external links, you The larger the investment, the more money you save.
In addition, there is a more painful thing. Shopify can only open one store with the money for one account. In other words, if you have a women’s clothing store and a 3C store, you have to pay twice, and you have to pay for N stores as long as the domain names are different. N times of money; and WordPress generally as long as the server can be loaded, you can always open countless stores.
1.2 Theme and plugin fees
Many functions of building a website need to be purchased separately, such as importing products from AliExpress, importing comments, countdown activities, data analysis, abandoning purchase recalls, automatic reply robots, SEO, all need plug-ins, and all have a very complete plug-in ecology. But generally speaking, Shopify plugins are much more expensive than WordPress, usually tens or hundreds of dollars a year, which is almost as much as the monthly rent of shopify. The most terrible thing is that maybe you use Shopify for basic monthly rent of 29 dollars, but you buy the plugin but spend 100 US dollars per month – spend at least dozens of dollars a month to buy plug-ins, and many times it is really just needed.
WordPress is more flexible in this regard, and many functions can even be implemented through free plug-ins. Don’t forget, there are also various black technologies that save money in domestic use of plug-ins (I won’t say it so straightforwardly here, you can make up your own mind, don’t understand exchange at any time). In the same way, beautiful website themes also cost money.
It is normal to do a good job of a website and buy paid themes and several paid plugins. Anyway, using WordPress can save at least 4 figures of plugin fees every year. (You can increase the advertising cost or SEO budget again)
2Payment and collection
Shopify has a feature of Shopify payment, but if you do not use Shopify payment, but use your own payment method, in addition to the handling fee of the collection channel (paypal, stripe, etc.), an additional 2% handling fee will be charged for each transaction, which is a bit It hurts, for many years, the commission of 2% is also a lot of cost.
I have never used Shopify payments. According to the instructions, you need to have overseas qualifications. In fact, it is better to open Stripe directly if you have this condition.
WordPress does not have this charge, all you need to pay is the handling fee for the payment channel (Paypal, Stripe, etc.).
It is very important to be an independent website in the end, but to do content marketing and SEO, especially for someone like me who pays attention to content marketing. Although Shopify can also do SEO, the conclusion I have communicated with several old SEO drivers offline is that After the WP explosion, the superiority of WordPress for SEO is recognized as obviously better, and some people are even forced to use Shopify for order processing, while WordPress is used for front-end display or content station for SEO, so why not use the full set of WordPress from the beginning Woolen cloth?
About sold products and store closures
This thing is a bit metaphysical, but don’t forget that Shopify is a Canadian company, and the power of life and death is in the hands of others. Recently, a friend of mine has been banned from the store, and it is not an explosion or a station group, but a legitimate product. It is very rare to be banned just after it goes online, and the probability is not high, but judging from the situation that FB and GMC are getting stricter and tighter, it will only be a trend. But with more and more users, Shopify will have certain reviews of brands and products.
In Worpress, only the server provider can block your store, and why does he block you when he has nothing to do? And even if one in a billion is blocked, data and programs can be backed up to your hard drive, you just have to change the server. And Shopify is closed, where do you go for a second Shopify? You can only find Worpress or other website builder.
Of course, the above are all extreme cases. If you are a legitimate product, it is actually fine, but if it is a ca-side ball product, a station group, an explosive model, and a small black ash, then you cannot use Shopify, and the store is likely to be closed.
Regarding the domestic website building tools, the good and the bad are mixed. I will not make too many comments here. I would like to mention that it is recommended to use those who only focus on building websites and are familiar with them. Do not use those backgrounds that you are from a seller. After all, you are a referee and a player. Yes, you know.
With Shopify, your data is placed on its servers, so it’s a bit scary to say that it can see all your data, and of course, you have to trust other people’s professional ethics.
If you use WordPress, only the server provider can get your data. Generally, the server provider will not view the data, and the WordPress password is generally only viewable by you.
Many people are concerned about this, whether it will be attacked. Relatively speaking, Shopify is better. After all, it is definitely more difficult for hackers to crack Shopify’s server than the server you buy yourself, but in fact, if you buy a good server for WordPress, configure it well. , the security is not worse than Shopify, and the general problem server provider can solve it.
First of all, the two website building tools are very good. You can choose what to choose based on your actual needs. I have already analyzed a lot of them. I have directly concluded some details. If you want to know the specific reasons, please leave a message or private message me.
Finally, let me give you some pertinent advice. Now I have come into contact with many independent companies who have just started their own businesses, including individual or mom-and-pop stores, some from big factories, some with teams, and some from domestic to foreign… .Usually if the average person asks me, the official tone is, “If you are a novice, it is recommended to use Shopify, it is easy to get started”, if it is my good friend, I usually suggest: “Use WordPress, start a business in the early stage, you can save money Save, saving a few thousand dollars is enough for you to start cold.” However, many old drivers are using WordPress, so why don’t we choose the right one from the beginning?
